Writer For Hire
I’m more than a writer for hire. I’m your partner in success.
Every story has a beginning. Here’s mine…
“Shelly, I love the way you have with words!”
~ Helen Murphy, (former) Assistant Director, Communications & Marketing,
National Gallery of Canada / &
(former) Editor, McGill News~
Little did I realize how prophetic Helen’s words would be, and what an impact they would have on turning me into more than a simple writer for hire…
That’s when I was introduced to the world of writing. It’s a task I grew to love more and more as my career in an administrative capacity continued for some 25+ years. Helen’s guidance was formative and influential to say the least. She taught me so much – without realizing her influence. She has no idea how much her guidance meant to me.
The full story goes back waaaay further however.
The realization that I wanted to write (as a career choice)
would come some 25 years into my first career…
Because although my interest in writing emerged in my 20s, my love for words began at a young age. I recall how I was compelled to learn new words…to need to understand their meanings, and learn about context, so I could use those words properly. This inclination continued through childhood, throughout primary and secondary school years, and beyond. But at that time, becoming a specialized writer for hire was the furthest thing from a career possibility. Getting to that point would come some 25 years into my career…
It all came together in 2012, after many years honing my writing skills. I wanted to accomplish something greater while using them. Ha…the transition to talented writer for hire only took 50 years into my life’s journey.
The beauty of this new career is that I get to help business owners like you to create opportunities for success through your written messages.
I’m a logical and strategic thinker…
I haven’t let go of my past all together either. I continue to draw on previous skills as I strategize with you, to determine the best approach to achieve your writing and business goals.
You see I’m a logical, strategic and intuitive thinker by nature. It’s important for me to understand your situation, where you’re at, and where you intend to go – through your written material, so you move forward in a way that makes sense for you, and so you avoid obstacles that may stall your progress.
When We Collaborate
Working together is more than me sitting down to write your material without interacting with you. Any writer for hire can do that.
When we collaborate, you can count on:
✓ My ability to learn about your internal processes and procedures – so I can understand and develop necessary steps to complete tasks or projects (critical for producing how-to guides, or internal procedures type documents)
✓ Questions about your business and current situation – so I understand your writing challenges and potential implications on your business.
✓ Discussion and analysis of the situation – so we come up with the best possible strategies for your specific goals and intentions.
✓ Delivering a clear scope of work for a project – so you know what to expect from me.
✓ Presenting your intended message with power – so it generates more interest and better results for your business.
✓ Conveying the value of your goods or services to your audience clearly – so they’re compelled to take action.
✓ Words to deliver greater impact on your audience’s perception of you – so you establish a deeper connection, allowing them to develop trust in you.
In essence, I become part of your extended team of trusted partners – as we build a worthwhile, lasting relationship that benefits you in the long run.

But i digress…there’s more to the story…
I’m also honoured to have worked with Centurion K9 PTSD Service Dogs to help enhance material for a fundraising initiative, and other promotional or strategic material. Centurion K9 is an Ottawa based (not-for-profit) organization, providing critical services as they rescue and train life-saving service dogs for deserving sufferers of PTSD. Recipients are Ottawa area first responders – i.e. police, fire, EMTs, military – active or retired – servicemen/women.
This writer for hire story continues – with hobbies on the creative side. And when the keyboard stops clicking, the camera takes over.
I’d have to say that photography is my biggest love and go-to pass time.
I’ve snapped over 15,000 photos since buying my first little Casio digital camera over a decade ago. Today I rely on a Nikon, Coolpix P600. It’s my 5th camera.
Its’ not unusual to take 1,500 shots during a week’s vacation. The awe-inspiring landscapes, colourful birds and flowers, and intriguing insects or farm life compel me to snap. Let’s not forget the occasional winter landscape too. 😉
It doesn’t stop at photography…
Oil painting also brings enjoyment. This interest developed while working at the National Gallery of Canada during a ten-year stint. My preferred medium is oil on canvas.
Again, I’m beckoned by winter landscapes. There’s great inspiration in the works of (Dutch-born) artist, Cornelius Kreighoff. His depictions of the life and challenges of late 19th century natives and early Quebec settlers (most of which are winter scenes) are fascinating.
Back on the work front, let’s continue the story…
Since my major strengths lie in strategic and logical thinking, it seems logical to use those skills in conjunction with writing. That’s why I developed a series of useful and easy-to-apply educational resource guides.
As a specialized writer for hire, I cover subjects like
✓ copywriting principles
✓ real estate writing,
✓ direct mail marketing, and
✓ strategic planning (for small-business owners and solo entrepreneurs/consultants).
to help business owners like you to enhance your writing and other skills. Oh, and let’s not forget the free info-graphics I created. These also provide essential writing tips, and are a great place to start. Ask me about them if you’d like to receive your personal reference copy. 🙂
But wait…there’s more!
In addition to these publications, there’s an on-line course (developed at the request of the good folks of Skillshare.com). It’s based on one of my information products – Strategic Planning for Small-Business.
NEWLY LAUNCHED (September 1, 2018): After having seen the on-line Skillshare course, CPDFormula.com invited me to be one of their trusted instructors, and to share, “Better and Easier Strategic Planning” as part of their continuing professional development on-line courses for CPA members.
As a multi-subject writer for hire, my goal includes writing more information guides and educational material – be it for myself, or for you. So be sure to let me know if you’d like to see a particular topic covered. Learn more details about these publications, or score your personal copy.
Why Any Of This Matters
All of this does matter!
Because when we work together, I take your writing challenge as my personal writing challenge. I treat you, your project, and goals with the utmost respect, love, strategic know-how…and artistic flair required…so your messages and material do the job you intend them to do – to enhance your prospects for success.
Ultimately, my story’s highlight is when you decide to work with this enthusiastic writer for hire.
But there is no end…yet!
The story only ends when I unplug my computer for the last time. I don’t anticipate that to be for another 50 years. 🙂
Could your business benefit from a writer for hire?
What kind of writing challenges are holding you back? Maybe one of my services can help propel your business forward. If something stands out as a possible solution for you, let’s talk.
Final NOTE: I was never able to find or reconnect with Helen after I left the National Gallery of Canada and began my new career. I wanted to thank her for all she has done. She has no idea how much I appreciate the opportunity that was put in front of me, or how much she means to me – even after all these years.
Helen, if you’re still out there…wherever you are…Thank you!
